Yapahuwa is a lesser-visited rock fortress that briefly served as Sri Lanka’s capital in the 13th century, with an ornately carved stone stairway that remains one of the finest examples of medieval Sinhalese stone craft. Its relative obscurity means visitors often have the site largely to themselves.
